The Atheists In Kenya Society condemns the arrest of the President of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, Mr. Mubarak Bala, by the Nigerian administration.
We understand that Mr. Bala was arrested and detained at the Kaduna police command, Nigeria, for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad on Facebook. Bala was arrested on Tuesday afternoon (28th April, 2020).
Mr. Bala is accused of abandoning Islam for Atheism and making posts on his Facebook page that are described as provocative to Muslims.
The arrest of Mr. Bala is an affront on freedom of expression, thought, and religion. This amounts to an abuse of archaic blasphemy laws with the aim of stifling dissent and debate, harass those of a different religious position, legitimize violence, and settle petty disputes.
We call for his immediate release.
