The Atheists In Kenya Society is calling for a prompt and comprehensive inquiry by the Kenyan authorities into the shooting of K24 journalist Catherine Wanjeri wa Kariuki on July 16.
Kariuki, a journalist for the privately owned Mediamax Network Ltd media group, was struck three times by rubber bullets in her left thigh while reporting on anti-government protests in Nakuru County.The shooting of Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki, a journalist attached to Kameme TV, while in the company of other journalists and the police, is shameful and terrifying MCK CEO, David OmwoyoHarrison Mumia, President of the Atheists In Kenya Society called the shooting “shameful” and urged watchdog agencies to investigate and bring the assailants to justice. Journalists, as guardians of democracy, play a crucial role in informing the public and holding powerful institutions accountable. There is need for law enforcement agencies to respect the media and ensure journalists’ safety at all times.
