The remarks made yesterday by Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof. George Magoha to the effect that “atheists should go straight to hell” are a clear demonstration of his strong anti-atheist prejudice. Prof. Magoha has shown blatant hostility towards the atheist community in Kenya.
Prof. Magoha acknowledged that he was brought up a Christain. As a Cabinet Secretary for Education, he, or any other STATE OFFICER should not allow his religious upbringing or beliefs to influence government policy.
We want to bring to the attention of Prof. Magoha that children of atheist parents are also enrolled in public schools in Kenya. Encouraging coerced religious practice in public schools amounts to discrimination against children belonging to atheist parents.
Out of respect for the freedom of religion, the Cabinet Secretary for Education should ban forced religious practice in public schools. Indeed, such coercion is forbidden by Article 32 (4) of the Constitution which states “A person shall not be compelled to act or engage in any act, that is contrary to the person’s belief or religion.”
