Today, on HUDUMA DAY, we would like to celebrate LILIAN NGÁNGÁ for being bold enough to publicly end his relationship with Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua in a civilized way and get into one with rapper JULIANI (Julius Owino).
Religious institutions in KENYA forbid divorce, and there are strong cultural beliefs that women should endure unhealthy relationships and make them work because if there is a fault to be found in that relationship, it’s on the part of the woman and her responsibility to fix it. These religious and cultural beliefs play a large role in hindering many women from leaving unhappy and abusive relationships.
Lilian, by ending her relationship with a prominent and wealthy politician, has demonstrated a rare independence, admirable selfishness, freedom and boldness which many Kenyan married women lack.
One of the values of the Atheists In Kenya Society is FREEDOM. We hold that all people have the inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that all people are entitled to freedom of conscience.
Many women fear leaving unhappy relationships.
They fear of what people and the church will say about them, they fear being rejected by family and friends, and they fear not finding love again. Some women fear losing custody over children.
Many women fear being unable to cope financially outside the relationship, especially if the man is wealthy.
Lilian has overcome the stigma attached to ending a marriage. Lilian has handled the judgement and blame on social media very well. We urge Kenyan women be bold like Lilian and flee from unhappy, abusive marriages.
