There has been a lot of debate within the Kenyan atheist community, especially on our Facebook Group as to why atheists need to become registered members of AIK. A few have argued that AIK should not turn into a religion, by asking atheists to pay to become members. Others have insinuated that I am becoming some pastor Kanyari. Ati nataka kupanda mbegu. Some atheists don’t even see the need for an atheist organization, yet they are on our online groups. The irony.
What is a Society?
A society, or a human society, is a group of people involved with each other through persistent relations, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations.
Human societies are characterized by patterns of relationships (social relations) between individuals who share a distinctive culture and institutions; a given society may be described as the sum total of such relationships among its constituent members. In the social sciences, a larger society often evinces stratification and/or dominance patterns in subgroups.
Insofar as it is collaborative, a society can enable its members to benefit in ways that would not otherwise be possible on an individual basis; both individual and social (common) benefits can thus be distinguished, or in many cases found to overlap. A society can also consist of like-minded people governed by their own norms and values within a dominant, larger society. This is sometimes referred to as a subculture, a term used extensively within criminology.
More broadly, a society may be illustrated as an economic, social, or industrial infrastructure, made up of a varied collection of individuals.
Members of a society may be from different ethnic groups. A society can be a particular ethnic group, such as the Saxons; a nation state, such as Bhutan; or a broader cultural group, such as a Western society. The word society may also refer to an organized voluntary association of people for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic, or other purposes.
Why register as a member of the atheists in Kenya Society?
It is very important to register as a member.
If you are skeptical about registration, you need to understand that AIK is a registered society. Not just that, we are the only registered atheists organization in Kenya. It is also the most vibrant atheist organization in East and Central Africa, if not Africa. Many countries from across the world are looking up to us to see if we will have some impact on the country. We are affiliated to Humanists International, Atheists Alliance International, International Atheists Association and many more.
Not an easy feat. So the next step for AIK is to create a community of committed members. Why? Because we want to tap into the brains of all atheists to bring about fundamental change. We need you on board. We need you to become a paid up member, so that you can actually be part of the people driving change in AIK.
The following issues are on our agenda for change
- Religious education, we want reforms in religious education in Kenya
- Secularism, we wan’t a total separation of church and state
- Promoting Science in schools, government etc, we want GoK to make decision that are science based
- Promoting human rights, advancing fundamental freedoms and this is important. We want atheists to be recognized in places of employment, schools, and we want to end systemic discrimination of atheists in Kenya.
- Welfare for atheists, for instance, we want to provide a medical cover for registered members
- Giving loans to registered atheists to start business
- Celebrants – Getting atheists to wed in a secular way
- Funerals for atheists
- Debates in universities
- Starting AIK chapters in Counties
All these things require that we have members who we are working with.
